What is the difference between a Credit Report and a Credit Check?

A credit check is the process of requesting a copy of an individual’s Credit Report from one of the major Credit Bureaus (i.e. Equifax). Credit checks are often performed when applying for jobs, rentals, loans, credit cards or other forms of credit.

A credit report is a summary of the credit data held by the credit bureau and includes payment history (cell phone, credit cards, mortgages, auto loans), collections and credit inquiries. Credit Reports also contain a credit score. A credit score is a three-digit number produced by the issuing credit bureau to provide a summary on the credit worthiness of the individual. Scores typically range from 300-900. The higher an individual's credit score the better as it indicates the individual is more credit worthy.
