Can I report debts from former Tenants to Credit Bureaus?

Yes. Landlords and Property Managers can report unpaid rental debts to the Credit Bureaus

Housing Providers can report former Tenant's rental debt to the Credit Bureaus for the purpose of recovering the debt:

  • Consent is not required to report a debt to the Credit Bureaus
  • Debts from the past 6 years in Canada and 7 years in the US can be reported
  • These debts will stay on the former Tenant’s credit report until paid and may significantly impact their credit rating
  • Both unpaid rent and unpaid utilities as outlined in the lease can be reported without a judgment, but damages or penalty fees require a legal order
  • To report a former Tenant debt, turn on former Tenant Debt Reporting for a one-time fee
